Today the students learned about counter arguments and used the rest of the period to create and refute counter arguments for their persuasive essays. They will continue drafting their persuasive essays in tomorrow, so that they can self/peer edit on Thursday and then revise their essays in class on Friday.

Today the students took notes on a presentation about the four sentence types: simple, complex, compound, and complex-compound. Then they worked in groups to see how many different kinds of sentences they could make with independent clauses, dependent clauses, and coordinating conjunctions.

Today the students learned about ways to search for information to support their persuasive arguments, learned how to incorporate their research into their papers, and used the rest of the period to find supporting information. They will continue drafting their persuasive essays in class on Tuesday and Wednesday, so that they can self/peer edit on Thursday.

7th Grade--12/10

Today the students turned in their second drafts of their Hero's Journey expository essays for ungraded teacher feedback. Mrs. Malmed will return them on Wednesday, and they will have class time then to make revisions.

Then, the students took notes on a presentation about independent and dependent clauses. There are a few major points students should remember:
  • A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and predicate and expresses a complete thought.
  • A dependent clause is virtually the same thing as an independent clause except that a dependent clause does not express a full thought.
  • Dependent clauses often begin with dependent marker words, such as after, although, as, as if, because, before, even if, even though, if, in order to, since, though, unless, until, whatever, when, whenever, whether, and while.


Students learned how to identify and combine dependent and independent clauses.

Today the students investigated a "murder" to reinforce their ability to draw conclusions from "evidence." They practiced drawing conclusions from details and using those details to support their positions. 

On Monday, the students will begin researching for evidence to support their positions on their persuasive topics, and they will have class time on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to draft their essays.

Today students learned about persuasive appeals: 

Ethos - from the Greek meaning “moral” or “showing moral character” - an appeal that relates to the character and credibility of the writer
Pathos - from the Greek meaning “suffering” - an appeal that evokes an emotional response from the reader.
Logos - from the Greek meaning “word” or “reason” - an appeal that addresses basic knowledge and needs that the listener might have and appeals to them in a common sense manner.
Students discussed ways to use ethos, pathos, and logos to get the reader's attention at the start of their essays, and they used these techniques to develop slogans to sell pain medications.
