Ethos - from the Greek meaning “moral” or “showing moral character” - an appeal that relates to the character and credibility of the writer
Pathos - from the Greek meaning “suffering” - an appeal that evokes an emotional response from the reader.
Logos - from the Greek meaning “word” or “reason” - an appeal that addresses basic knowledge and
needs that the listener might have and appeals to them in a common sense
manner.
Students discussed ways to use ethos, pathos, and logos to get the reader's attention at the start of their essays, and they used these techniques to develop slogans to sell pain medications.
