8th Grade--11/8

Today we began class by learning the WM words "girth" and "entreat". After that, students received a list of possible prompts for the To Kill a Mockingbird essay. They are:
 Compare and contrast Scout's journey towards adulthood with Ponyboy Curtis's journey towards adulthood in The Outsiders. How do both novels communicate the idea of end of childhood, and use that theme to structure the narrative?
 Using evidence from the novel, track Scout's "end of childhood", explaining the events that showed her as a child, caused her transition, and proved that she was becoming an adult.
 Using evidence from the novel, track Jem's "end of childhood", explaining the events that showed him as a child, caused his transition, and proved that he was becoming an adult.
One could argue that the story of Tom Robinson within this novel represents a death of the American Dream. How is Tom a personification of this theme, and how does his death represent a larger death or failure within American society?
Students used the rest of the class period to begin outlining and picking a prompt about which to write. Students turned in their books so that annotations can be graded; books will be returned tomorrow.

Long term due dates
